This information is from a 1940 Belknap catalog. In 1840 one hundred years ago Mr. W. B. Belknap started business in a small three-story brick building on the Northeast corner of 3rd and Main Streets, Louisville. A corner stone marking this site still appears in the present structure. Bar Iron, Carriage and Wagon Hardware, Blacksmiths' Supplies, Mule and Horse Shoes, Nails and Spikes were the principal lines handled. A local territory was served Transportation was by a river, Mules and Carts. Today Belknap's enormous plant includes twelve huge buildings, comprises 37 acres of floor space and is among the Nation's largest wholesale enterprises. Belknap Private Brands are nationally recognized for quality.
Illustrated in upper left-hand corner is the House of Belknap as it appeared when founded in 1840 by Mr. W. B. Belknap. Compare this small three-story structure of a hundred years ago with the vast network of huge buildings of today-twelve in all-comprising thirty-seven acres of floor space and covering several city blocks.
Each building was designed and built for its special purpose, fully equipped with modern facilities for rapid and economical handling of our customers' orders. Our plant is serviced by spiral chutes from upper floors to shipping floors and packing rooms, rapid automatic conveyors, underground tunnels, overhead bridges, large, fast freight elevators and a complete pneumatic tube system connecting all departments.
Ripid tractors and trailers are used for inter-plant hauling. All Belknap Warehouses have railroad sidings enabling us to unload and reload sixty-eight cars daily. Forty-five Railroad, Truck and Boat Line Terminals are within less than 1 1/2 miles of our plant. The Ohio River with its increasing shipping facilities is one block away. The Kentucky approach to the Municipal Bridge, connecting Kentucky and Indiana, is right at our door. Our unexcelled facilities for the handling of orders and our favorable location enable us to place shipments in the carriers' hands promptly. It is a genuine pleasure to have our many friends and customers visit, affording us the privilege of showing them through our office and plant.
